Representative Wind Feasibility Experience

Superna principals are experienced in all stages of the wind development process, able to recognize and assess areas of risk and opportunity, including assets, equipment procurement and power purchase agreements. Selected wind feasibility experience is outlined below.

Site Feasibility

Superna Energy has assessed numerous sites for wind developers and land owners for feasibility of developing wind power projects.  Sites in Iowa, Montana, Texas, Wisconsin, Illinois and the Greek Archipelago have been studied with regard to wind resource, transmission availability, economic feasibility and off-take potential.  Activities included interconnection and transmission evaluation, siting, topography analysis, gathering and evaluating met tower data, zoning and permitting investigations, market research, preliminary lease and royalty negotiations and real estate negotiations. Superna also worked with local and state governments to understand tax incentives and economic development resources.

Turbine Purchase Negotiation & Risk Mitigation

Superna principals have led the purchase and negotiation efforts for over 200 MW of turbines from a Japanese manufacturer. This included negotiating the terms and conditions of the contract including price and delivery schedule to several locations, ensuring that the equipment complied with local safety requirements, including access for maintenance and repair.  This six-month process included making staged payments and on-going discussion of design specifications. Understanding the procurement process in an equipment-constrained business environment is critical to mitigating project and corporate risk.

Wind Development in Iowa, Detailed Economic & Strategic Assessment

Lead developer for a proposed wind generation project in the northwestern Iowa. Early stage development activities included preliminary interconnection and transmission evaluation, PPA inquiries, siting, topography analysis, preliminary wind resource evaluation, preliminary lease and royalty negotiations and real estate negotiations. The detailed economic assessment of the project, as well as understanding the corporate strategy being pursued, led to the cancellation of the project.

Wind Mid Stage Development

Superna principals have taken a client project in Texas from permitted to shovel-ready. This included negotiation of turbine purchases, writing requests for proposals for both Balance of Plant providers and road builders, selecting the providers and providing project management for the implementation of those tasks.  The project was in an area of exposed rock, requiring non-standard foundation design for the towers.  Superna Energy facilitated conversations with the bank’s engineer to explain the design and allow the project financing to move forward.

Superna Energy is in the early stage of development a wind farm with potential production of 300 MW of renewable energy resources to serve the Texas and southwest energy markets.  Discussions are underway regarding wind regime verification and data, property lease negotiations, interconnection and permitting, etc.

Superna Energy is also in early stage development of a wind farm on over 2000 acres of agricultural property in western Iowa and on a 4500 acre industrial location in north central Illinois.  Each of these locations is in close proximity to other wind energy projects already in service.
